Urmila was first seen as a child artist in Shekhar Kapoor's directorial venture, 'Masoom' with Nasseruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. From the innocence of those childhood days to being tagged as a 'sex-symbol' after the release of Rangeela, Urmila has come a long way.
After some more films as a child artiste, Urmila surprised everyone with 'Chamatkar' where she starred opposite Shahrukh Khan. The movie was her first ‘grown-up’ film as an actress. What followed were movies like 'Aa Gale Lag Jaa' and 'Narsimha’, but it was her total make over with Ram Gopal Verma's 'Rangeela' with the like of Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff, that totally changed her image and she became the next big thing on screen.
.
Post 'Rangeela' a new chapter opened up in her career. Though offers kept pouring in, she was very selective with the movies she chose and made the right career moves. She was seen in films like 'Judaai' with Anil Kapoor & Sridevi, 'Aflatoon' with Akshay Kumar, 'Satya', 'Kaun', and 'Jaanam Samjha Karo' with Salman Khan.
A Ram Gopal Verma prodigy, Urmila gave some of her best performances in his movies like Bhoot, Kaun, Naina, Pyaar Tune Kyaa Kiya. She has also starred in other successful ventures like China Gate, Pinjar, Tehzeeb and Deewangee.
Urmila’s forthcoming movies include Ek Dhun Banaras Kee, Sholay, Chamki and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.
